John Melling
John Melling, Executive Chairman

John grew up on a mixed sheep and arable farm in Lancashire, eventually departing for Oxford University to study Geography. “Not then knowing what to do, I tossed a coin (being devoid of imagination, I could only think of either accountancy or law), and heads said ‘accountancy’.

“I joined Yorkshire Water in Leeds as a graduate trainee accountant in 1992, and then qualified in 1995 after gaining experience throughout the various finance and business planning functions of the business. I joined the family business in 1998, becoming Operations Director in 2000 and then Managing Director in 2002. I then became Executive Chairman of both Probiotics International Limited and Minsups Limited in 2006 – and I’ve held these positions ever since.

“I particularly enjoy the fact that I’ve been able to combine my farming background with my professional skills (such as they are) in running my family businesses. Less enjoyable over recent years has been my shared experience with my two sons as season ticket holders at Preston North End, though with our recent promotion back to the Championship perhaps sunnier times now lie ahead. Let’s hope this is true for British agriculture too.”

Apryl Biddle
Apryl Biddle, Managing Director

Apryl grew up on a Dairy Farm in Cheshire.  “As a child I was a tomboy who used to love helping my Dad around the farm.

“After attending the local grammar school I studied Accounting and Finance at Birmingham University.  I qualified as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG in 1989.

“While my three children were young I lectured part-time in accounting in the evenings.

“In 2001 I joined Minsups as a part-time Accountant.  During the 14 years I have been with the Company I have risen from part-time Accountant to Managing Director.

“I love my job as it incorporates both my farming background and accountancy skills and it’s true to say that no two days are ever the same.

“As a Farmers’ daughter I like to think that I understand the challenges facing farmers today.”
